I
know of no other single practice in the Christian life more rewarding,
practically speaking, than memorizing Scripture. . . . No other single exercise
pays greater spiritual dividends! Your prayer life will be strengthened. Your
witnessing will be sharper and much more effective. Your attitudes and outlook
will begin to change. Your mind will become alert and observant. Your
confidence and assurance will be enhanced. Your faith will be solidified.

Why A Good Memory is Not Required To Memorize Scripture
Memorizing Scripture: Good Memory Not Required
You may not believe you can memorize Bible
verses, but that’s just not true. You can memorize what you want to memorize.
If you’re in the U.S., you’ve probably memorized the Pledge of Allegiance. You
may have memorized the Lord's Prayer. You memorize what’s important to you:
phone numbers, song lyrics, recipes, and baseball stats. Memorizing Scripture
is really a matter of motivation rather than skill.
Rick Warren

How I Began Memorizing Scripture
Bible
memorization is absolutely fundamental to spiritual formation. If I had to
choose between all the disciplines of the spiritual life, I would choose Bible
memorization, because it is a fundamental way of filling our minds with what it
needs. This book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth. That’s where
you need it! How does it get in your mouth? Memorization.

professor of Philosophy at the University of Southern California

Whole Life and Whole Person” in Vocatio, Vol. 12, no. 2, Spring, 2001, 7).

Why Memorize Complete Passages of Scripture Rather Than Individual Verses
The Benefits of Memorizing Passages Over Individual Verses
The
Word of God comes to us, for the most part, in paragraphs—developed trains of thought
that tell a story (narrative, Gospels), unfold a law (Pentateuch), make a
doctrinal argument (epistles), make a case against God's people and their sins
or reveal the future of God's people (prophets), or describe in complex imagery
an apocalyptic vision of the future (Revelation). Individual verses do not
capture the train of thought and therefore are more likely to be taken out of
context.
