You hem me in, behind and before… Psalm 139:5
What It Means To Be Hemmed In By God's Love
When God hem’s us in it is literally to be surrounded by the Lord, our fortress and our defense. Spurgeon explains, “As though we were caught in an ambush, or besieged by an army which has wholly beleaguered the city walls, we are surrounded by the Lord. God has set us where we be, and beset us wherever we be. Behind us there is God recording our sins, or in grace blotting out the remembrance of them; and before us there is God foreknowing all our deeds, and providing for all our wants.”

One of my favorite Bible teachers, Brian Larson, declares, "Our lives are totally encompassed by God. He’s got you surrounded. There are no openings for anything to come through to you that is not a part of the ultimate purpose and will of God. This is what it means when God says He will keep you form all evil."
In my own life, I am so blessed when I consider how God has hemmed me, and every believer, in by His goodness. On one hand, we have the awesome promise of Psalm 84:11, "For the LORD God is a sun and shield; The LORD will give grace and glory; No good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly."
On the other hand, God also promises in Romans 8:28, "All things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose." So in God's goodness, we are always hemmed in by Love, for God is the very definition of love. (1 John 4:8)
