Why It Is So Sweet to Trust in Jesus

Sometimes I wonder what some of my friends and family must think about my decision to put my faith in Jesus, when they themselves see faith in Jesus as a crutch or foolishness. Before I chose to put my faith in Jesus, when trials arose I placed my trust in:
  • My own abilities--which would either come through for me or fall short.
  • My own wisdom--which was only limited to that which I knew.
  • My own strength--which was only as strong as I was
  • My own possessions--which could get lost, malfunction, break down, etc.
  • Other people--who may come through or disappoint because of their own busy lives and circumstances

All these things, I had trusted before knowing Jesus. though capable to help to some degree, were ultimately limited in their abilities for one reason or another. I'd much rather put my trust in Jesus, who is not only available to help me 24-7, but will never leave me, never forsake me, and promises to deliver me from all my troubles. (Psalm 34:17-19) If you don't know Jesus, this may sound too good to be true, but that is exactly who Jesus is, and why I can't imagine putting my trust anywhere else. But those are just a fraction of the blessings I receive from putting my trust in the Lord. When we place our trust in Jesus, the Bible promises we will be blessed--and that abundantly!

Consider the incredible blessings God rewards our faith with when we trust in Him.

When we trust in God we will:
    • Be surrounded by mercy (Psalm 32:10)
    • Be kept in perfect peace (Isaiah 26:3)
    • Be happy (Proverbs 16:20)
    • Rejoice (Psalm 33:21)
    • Be taken care of (Psalm 37:5)
    • Be delivered from our enemies (Psalm 37:40)
    • Be kept safe (Proverbs 29:25)
    • Be radiant (Psalm 34:5)
    • Not be put to shame (Romans 10:11)
    • Be victorious (2 Chronicles 13:18)
    • Not be moved (Psalms 125:1)
    • Be prospered (Proverbs 28:25)
    • Be delivered (Jeremiah 39:18)
    • Be protected by God (Psalm 18:30)
    • Have our prayers answered (1 Chronicles 5:20)
    • Be established (2 Chronicles 20:20)
    • Never thirst (John 6:35)
    • Not be afraid (Psalm 112:7)

It is amazing that God blesses us with all this by simply putting our trust in Him--not to mention the incredible blessings we forfeit when we place our trust elsewhere.  As Joseph Scriven observes in his wonderful hymn, What A Friend We Have In Jesus:
“O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.”

When we are faced with the headaches and heartaches of life, may we make it a habit to sprint to God and His Word for help and answers. When we do we are certain to be blessed!

Question for you: How has God shown Himself faithful in your life, as a result of you putting your trust in Him? I'd love to hear your praise reports!

    1. That's a wonderful question. God has shown himself faithful to us by blessing our obedience in unforeseen ways. We'll obey him in some small thing and as a result receive entirely unexpected blessings.

    2. Thank you for the list of verses!

Back in 2001, I was working graveyards at the FWPD transcribing reports. One night I took a home pregnancy test (at work) and it turned out positive. One week later, the pregnancy was confirmed by my ob/gyn. The next night at work, I started bleeding.

I drove myself to the hospital. Since I had only had a urine test, the ER Dr refused to believe at first that I was actually pregnant until they got a blood test/ultrasound.

I lay there alone in the examination room, crying out to God, "What do I hope for? That I'm not actually pregnant? That I am pregnant, but might be losing the child? What happens if I am pregnant, but the child is born with issues?" (I was 41 at the time.)

Then Psalm 23 came to me. I've had it memorized for years ... as it was the only thing that could calm me in the dentist chair in my teens.

I 'surrendered'. I prayed that if I was losing the baby, I would hate it, but that I would rely on God to get through the loss. If the baby was to be born with problems, well ... I could get through that with God's help too. I trusted in God's plan, and knew whatever the outcome, I could fulfill my part in it.

I was immediately flooded with the sweetest sense of calm and peace that I have experienced in my entire life, either before or after. (Now my daughter is 10 years old and tells me at night before she goes to sleep that it is time to pray.)

      1. Thank you, LuAnn, for sharing this beautiful testimony of God's goodness! Such a great example of Hebrews 11:6 that "He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him." Thank you for your example of faith in trying times. Psalm 23 is one of my favorite passages, too. Your daughter sounds like a girl after God's own heart. Thanks again for sharing! God bless you abundantly!

    5. Wonderful post about trusting the Lord. "He would never put us down when we truly trust Him.When I trust Him like a child, I always feel I'm strong and confident" This is how I've experienced God's faithfulness all my life. This post is such an encouragement.

    11. So many times God has proven Himself faithful! Once, God told me to take a job that paid less than a similar job with the public school system. When I look back at those ten years now, working with families with children with disabilities, I see how richly God blessed me with treasure that money could never buy. Thank you for your wonderful post.

      1. Thanks, Susan! So glad this blessed you! I can totally relate to what you said "I always fail when I place that trust in myself." Me too! Reading in Jeremiah 17:5-8, about the stark contrast between those who trust in themselves vs. those who trust in the Lord never ceases to amaze me. What a huge difference it makes whenever we put our trust in the Lord and vice-versa. God bless you richly!

    16. Let me count the ways. God has been and continues to be so faithful. He walked me through my five miscarriages when depression, confusion, and heartache swirled ... and when I was so angry at Him. He stayed close when we were told our only daughter had lifelong disabilities. He has been faithful through the big and little valleys of day to day life. And He is never hesitant to take my sin and wipe me clean.
      Praise the Lord most high!

      1. What an incredible testimony, Julie! My heart breaks for what you went through, and continue to endure. Yet God is so faithful to deliver. I wrote a post on this called "Why is God allowing This?" you may find encouraging http://brookeespinoza.blogspot.com/2012/01/why-is-god-allowing-this.html

One of my favorite promises is Psalm 34:19, "Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all." I love that every headache and heartache I endure is temporary. Deliverance is never a matter of "if", it is always a matter of "when." Praise the Lord most high, indeed! God bless you mightily!

    17. I love What a Friend We Have in Jesus. This was a wonderfully encouraging post. Thanks for sharing.

God has so richly blessed my husband and I lately. We had been debating for a long time to tithe a full 10% since we'd been so tight financially. We chose to trust God after praying for a month. We've been tithing 10% since the year began, and God has provided my husband with a bonus, we've gotten a new car, and we've been able to give back to our community and our church even more. I've been so excited to see how God has taken care of all our needs and has given us even more than we need. I've been so much more aware of God's generosity - not just financially, but physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. Praise the Lord!

      1. Thanks, for your encouraging words! So glad this blessed you. Thank you for sharing your fantastic praise report! Praise the Lord, indeed! Your praise report is such a beautiful picture of God's promise in Malachi 3:10, "Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it." Truly we can never out-give God.

That reminds me of a story from the great book, Living Water by Chuck Smith. He says, "Back in the 40's and 50's R.G. LaTourneau made a fortune inventing and manufacturing heavy-duty, earth-moving equipment. When he started his business, he made a covenant with God to give ten percent of all his profits to the Lord. As time went on and he began to be blessed more and more, LaTourneau made a new covenant to give God twenty percent. As the business continued to increase he raised it to thirty, then forty, then fifty, then sixty, and by the time he went home to be with the Lord, he was giving ninety percent to the Lord's work all over the world. Ninety percent. God had so blessed him that the ten percent he kept for himself was more than enough to live on. He learned that God simply won't be outgiven."

Rejoicing with you! May God continue to abundantly bless you as you continue to step out in faith and obedience to tithe, trusting God, all along, to provide.
