Simple Ways to Stay in the Word

Being a wife and mother, with all that I’ve been called to do, sometimes I have to get a little creative in how I obey Jesus’ call to abide in His Word. There have been times when I’ve felt like Jesus’ friend Martha (Luke 10:40)—feeling that I have so much to do that I don’t have the “luxury” of sitting at Jesus’ feet and just drinking His Words all in. (Luke 10:39) However, after learning that even when I am so way behind, I've noticed that when I , by faith, spend time with Jesus, He will help me not only get caught up, but even ahead of what I originally was trying to accomplish. Jesus always makes the time we spend with Him so worth it!

So what does Jesus mean when He calls us to abide in His Word? (John 15:4-8)

The Greek word for abide, menĊ, describes what Jesus wants our time in His Word to be like. He wants us:
  • To Remain in His Word
  • To tarry in His Word
  • To Not to depart from His Word
  • To Continually be in His Word
  • To Dwell in His Word
That’s a high calling for us when you consider how much you are already are called to if you are a wife, a mother, an employee, a  volunteer, etc. However, whatever God calls us to, we can be certain that He has already fully equipped us to obey. This is doable. (Philippians 4:13) Our already crazy-busy schedule may imply otherwise, but we can follow the example of Mary and just sit at the feet of Jesus and rest. (Luke 10:39)
Here are some of my favorite ways and resources for abiding in God’s Word throughout my days, despite how busy they may be. Today I am just going to focusing on resources for listening to God’s Word. I'll write later about other ways to abide like Bible study methods, Biblical meditation, Scripture memorization, etc. For now though, simply listening to God's Word is a great way to abide in it “when your hands are busy, but your mind is free” as Janet Pope says in regards to memorizing Scripture in her book His Word in My Heart: Memorizing Scripture for a Closer Walk with God.

So here are my favorite things I love listening to so I stay in the Word throughout my day:

1. Audio Bibles
The Word of Promise: Complete Audio Bible This NKJV audio Bible is my favorite audio Bible by far! Very well done! For me it really makes the Bible come alive even more. I listen to these in my car and have loaded them on my iPad, so I can listen to it wherever I am. Since this is the NKJV the version I also memorize from, when I am working on memorizing a chapter of Scripture (right now I'm six verses into memorizing 1 Peter 1). I like queing up the chapter I'm memorizing and just listening through the verses to solidify what I've memorized so far, and hear how the verses flow together so I can identify themes within the passage--making those mental connections as I listen through the verses
Bible.is App This is a great free app that in addition to having a bible on your phone, it has the ability to play the audio of any chapter you bring up. So if you are doing something that doesn't allow to read your Bible, like driving, cooking, ironing, folding laundry, cleaning, reorganizing, etc. just hit the audio button to listen to the Bible and you can still get what you need done and still be abiding and being refreshed by the Word. With this app, you're audio Bible can go with you wherever your phone goes.

2. Scripture Songs

Seeds Family Worship are NIV (1984) verses set to music. These songs are awesome! I can't believe they are not on the radio! The melodies are wonderful and the verses are so inspiring. Though I have and love all their albums, my favorite album of theirs is Seeds of Courage

Hide 'em in Your Heart are also in the NIV (1984) though more geared towards kids. Even so, I've found myself singing some of the songs that are especially catchy. I love their song "When I am afraid, I will trust in you." It's so comforting. I like singing it with my girl as I tuck her in for bedtime, as a last comforting thought before she drifts off to sleep.  Hide Em in Your Heart Vol 1 & 2

 3. Bible teachings verse-by-verse.

I love Pastor Chuck Smith’s Through the Bible C-2000 Commentary by Chuck Smith on 8 Audio MP3 discs (Audio of Old & New Testaments in MP3) They are excellent!

    1. Thanks, Tereasa! I think you'll really like it! I love listening to an audio Bible while I drive. I think God helps us to stay focused on driving while we listen because He doesn't want anything to get in our way of being in His Word. That's so great that your kids are being blessed by the audio Bible, too! I love how God's Word has something for everyone--regardless of age. God bless you lots!

    1. Thanks, Theresa! I love what you said about straying from God's path, "but the thing is to get back on it." So true! Like the father of the prodigal son, God is waiting with open arms to receive us when we come back to Him after a season of straying. He loves us so much! God bless you richly!
